Early Evening Jazz: Joan Hutton Trio

November 15 @ 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Saturday Night Jazz at kj's hideaway

Composer/saxophonist Joan Hutton will perform a mix of originals, standards, and free jazz with guitarist Mike Wolter and bassist Dan Carpel.

Joan Hutton is a performer, composer, and educator in Minneapolis whose diverse talents make her equally in demand in both the classical and jazz worlds. She has released two albums on Shifting Paradigm Records: “Take That Back” (2022) and “Splash” (2024). Both albums feature compositions written by Joan and co-leader Sue Orfield that are characterized by infectious melodies, tight harmonies, and whimsical improvisations. Joan is also a longtime member of the Ancia Saxophone Quartet, which has recordings on the Naxos and Albany labels. She has a large studio of private students and teaches saxophone and clarinet at Augsburg University.

Dan Carpel attended Berklee College of Music, where he was in the school’s Monterey Quartet. He was a member of Jason Palmer’s band throughout his time in town, and was a mainstay in their residency at Wally’s Jazz Cafe. His time out east also notably included playing in groups led by Godwin Louis, Noah Preminger, and Melissa Aldana. Since relocating to the Twin Cities, Dan has regularly worked with Javi Santiago, Zacc Harris, and Omar Abdulkarim. He frequently performed with singer/guitarist Mary Cutrufello as well as Sonny Knight and the Lakers, and he recently became a part of Dylan Hicks’s Small Screens.

Upon relocating to the Twin Cities, guitarist and composer Mike Wolter dug into a variety of the local music scenes, often working with musicians from both the preeminent vanguard and the eclectic fringe. He has become one of the area’s most sought-after guitarists and band leaders. In 2021, Wolter’s interest in the intersection of music and social change inspired him to repurpose a sizable grant he received from the St. Paul Arts Board for showcasing his music to include, and bring together, the varied musical acts from around town he admired while also raising several thousand dollars for local nonprofits working to better the community.
